ISSUES WE FACE/POV section
The system (democratic capitalism) generally works - my concern is the things that undermine the system

Democracy, news and media The social effects of the commercialization of the mass media are a big problem journalist: both freedom and responsibility, all the way up the chain
***
from the Committee of Concerned Journalists:
"We are facing the possibility that independent news will be replaced by self-interested commercialism posing as news. If that occurs, we will lose the press as an independent institution, free to monitor the other powerful forces and institutions in society."

the main purpose of journalism is to provide people with the information they need to be free and self-governing.

To fulfill this task:

  1. Journalism's first obligation is to the truth.

  2. Its first loyalty is to citizens.

  3. Its essence is a discipline of verification.

  4. Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover.

  5. It must serve as an independent monitor of power.

  6. It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise.

  7. It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant.

  8. It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional.

  9. Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience.

--Committee of Concerned Journalists

Information citizens need to be free and self-governing:
  • How government (local, regional, national) is functioning
    • whether it is serving all the people adequately
    • if not, who/what is responsible and what can be done about it
  • Money, economic trends affecting:
    • prices
    • jobs
    • housing
    • taxes
  • Social Issues, affecting quality of life:
    • health
    • education
    • crime

--Walter Cronkite

What Has Value? distractions of materialism and status chasing - people must take resposibility, not allow "fetish capitalism" to pander to them - it corrupts. It lessens the power of people, gives power to "desire" - this power can become so lopsided that even good people can't resist it.

Israel/Palestine - self feeding dynamic (give the history, at least that one tape) - nobody knows how to stop it - big problems call for big solutions: love is the only real answer

US Debt Somebody will end up paying this... US Debt More of US Debt

Energy Independence I'm all for interdependence, but not if it means injustice to meet energy needs.

Internet What a great tool! Lets keep it open and free - don't charge for traffic.
